Common Issues

Appliance Troubles We See All The Time

Symptoms

The interior feels warm even while the compressor runs, or the fridge cools in bursts and never settles at a steady temperature. You might notice frost climbing the back wall of the freezer, water pooling under the crisper drawers, or a sheet of ice forming on the freezer floor. Other tell-tale signs are a compressor that clicks, hums louder than usual or switches on and off in short cycles, an ice maker that has quietly stopped producing, condensation collecting around the door, or a fridge that suddenly runs far noisier than you're used to.

Diagnose & Repair

We begin with a full temperature and airflow reading, then work the sealed system in order — condenser coils, condenser fan, door gaskets and the defrost drain — before going deeper to the evaporator fan, defrost heater, thermostat, start relay and the compressor itself. Every part is tested rather than guessed at, so you only pay for what's actually failed. We replace worn seals, seized fans, burnt defrost elements, faulty relays and control boards, and diagnose or recharge the refrigerant circuit when the fault sits there. Before we pack up, we confirm the unit is holding its set temperature and cycling normally, so the repair holds instead of calling us back in a week.

Symptoms

The washer won't drain, won't spin, or stops partway through and leaves the drum full of water. It might shake hard enough to walk across the floor, bang loudly on the spin cycle, leak from the door or from underneath, or refuse to fill in the first place. On the dryer side the drum keeps turning but clothes come out damp, a single load needs two or three cycles to dry, you hear grinding or a high-pitched squeal, or you catch a hot, burning, lint-like smell near the vent — the sign that airflow is choked.

Diagnose & Repair

On washers we check the drain pump and filter, inlet valves, pressure switch, door latch and gasket first, then move to the suspension, tub bearings, drive motor and control board if the basics are sound. On dryers we inspect the entire exhaust path, heating element or gas igniter, thermal fuse, cycling thermostats, drive belt, rollers and blower wheel. Each part is tested under load so the real cause is found, not masked — then we clear restricted vents and replace failed pumps, valves, latches, elements, fuses, belts and bearings with the correct components. Every job finishes with a live cycle to confirm it drains, spins, heats and runs quietly the way it should.

Symptoms

Water sits in the bottom of the tub after a cycle, or the dishwasher won't drain at all. Dishes come out cloudy, filmy or gritty, glasses feel rough to the touch, and detergent isn't rinsing away cleanly. You may also spot water seeping out near the toe kick or along the door, hear the pump straining or buzzing, notice the cycle running far longer than normal, or get an error code that halts it before it finishes.

Diagnose & Repair

We start with the filter, spray arms and jets, drain hose and drain pump, then check the water inlet valve, door seal, float switch, heating element and control board. We clear blockages, descale the interior where hard water has built up, and replace worn door seals, faulty inlet valves, tired pumps, cracked spray arms and failed boards as the fault requires. Once it's back together we run a full hot cycle and confirm the unit fills, washes, drains and dries cleanly with no leaks left behind — so the dishes come out the way they're meant to.

Symptoms

A gas burner clicks but won't light, lights only after a delay, or burns with a weak yellow flame instead of a steady blue one. On electric tops an element won't heat or heats unevenly, and induction zones may fail to recognise a pan or cut out mid-cook. The oven runs hotter or colder than the dial says, bakes unevenly with hot and cold spots, takes far too long to preheat, or has a door that no longer seals and lets heat leak out around the edges.

Diagnose & Repair

On gas models we inspect the igniter, spark module, burner ports, gas valve and safety valve; on electric and induction we test the elements, infinite switches, coils and sensors. For the oven we measure the true cavity temperature against the setpoint, then check the bake and broil elements or gas igniter, the temperature sensor, control board and door gasket. Where it's drifting we recalibrate, and we replace igniters, elements, sensors, switches, valves and gaskets as needed — always to code. Before we sign off, every burner is confirmed to light cleanly and the oven is verified to hold the temperature you set.

Simple Checks You Can Try Yourself

A few safe things to rule out before you book. If none of these sort it, it's a job for a technician, and we can usually be there the same day.

Fridge — safe checks

  • Set the temperature dial to about 3°C in case it got bumped
  • Check the door shuts fully and nothing inside blocks the seal
  • Vacuum the dust off the coils at the back or underneath
  • Don't overpack it, cold air needs room to move around

Still warm after a few hours? It's likely a repair — book a visit.

Washer — safe checks

  • Redistribute the load, an unbalanced drum won't spin
  • Make sure the door or lid is fully latched shut
  • Check the drain hose at the back isn't kinked or pinched
  • Clean the filter behind the small panel at the front bottom

Still won't drain or spin? It's likely a repair — book a visit.

Dryer — safe checks

  • Clean the lint filter, every single load, without fail
  • Check the vent flap outside the house opens freely
  • Give clothes room to tumble, don't overload the drum
  • Make sure the door clicks fully shut before it starts

Still damp after a full cycle? It's likely a repair — book a visit.

Dishwasher — safe checks

  • Clean the filter at the bottom of the tub
  • Check the spray arms spin and the holes aren't blocked
  • Run the kitchen tap hot before you start the cycle
  • Make sure the drain hose isn't kinked behind the unit

Still not draining or cleaning? It's likely a repair — book a visit.

Oven — safe checks

  • Unplug it for a minute to clear a stuck demo mode
  • Check the door closes and seals properly all around
  • Confirm the real temperature with an oven thermometer
  • Position the racks so heat can move around the food

Still not heating or way off? It's likely a repair — book a visit.

Stove — safe checks

  • Reseat the burner caps and wipe the ports dry after spills
  • Push the knobs in and turn fully through each setting
  • Induction: use induction-ready cookware only
  • Smooth-top: wipe residue off the surface for good contact

Burner still won't light? We handle gas — book a visit.

These are safe, surface-level checks. Anything behind a panel, a gas line, or wiring should always be left to a technician.
